Sunday, September 16th, 2007 Markham-4 @ Pickering-1 HOME OPENER ENDS IN LOSS. PICKERING, ON: For the 2nd straight year the Pickering Panthers welcomed the Markham Waxres to Pickering to open the home portion of their schedule. The result was once again a 3-goal spread, however this year the decision went to the visitors. A shorthanded Pickering lineup seemed to get a break right off the bat when Waxer forward David Kostuch was assessed a 2-minute minor, plus a 10-minute misconduct for head checking just one minute into the game. Just over five minutes later the Panthers would find themselves on a full two minute two man advantage – but neither powerplay could generate enough chances to beat Breton MacKinnon. Midway through the period the Waxer Michael Catenacci would convert on a scoring chance to open the scoring. Make it 1-0 Waxers after 20-minutes. Early in the 2nd period, with the Waxers shorthanded, Catenacci picked up the puck and walked in un-harassed and roofed a backhander for his 2nd of the game to make it 2-0. Midway through the period David Mathers converted, giving the Waxers a 3-0 lead after 40-minutes. Late in the 3rd period with the score 4-0 Markham, Pickering finally showed some scoring touch. Greg Riggs and Brendan Hann setup Jamie MacQueen for a one-timer in the slot that beat MacKinnon clean. It was MacQueen’s 2nd goal and 3rd point in 3-games this season. Make the final 4-1 Markham. The Panthers settle in for a busy 4-games in 5-days this week. Wednesday in Pickering vs Dixie at 7:30pm. Friday in Pickering vs Toronto at 7:30pm.
