PANTHERS WIN ANOTHER IN OT!
Von Englebrechten Scores the Winner in Return to Lineup...
LINDSAY, ON: In an entertaining goal-filled contest, the Pickering Panthers went a full 360-degrees, jumping out to take the lead, falling behind, fighting back to force OT, and then getting the game-winning-goal from Tyler Von Englebrechten in his 1st game this season.
The Panthers jumped out to a great start. Tyler Hauer scored his 1st of the season just 1:47 into the game. Midway through the period, Andrew Fairney scored his 4th of the year to give Pickering an early 2-0 lead.
The Muskies, playing in front of their home fans were determined to erase the deficit before the end of the period. A pair of powerplay goals (Murray Free & Aaron Keaney) knotted the game at 2-2.
With time ticking down in the opening frame, the Panthers received a huge boost, when defenceman Brandon Parks found the back of the net for his 1st of the season, with 11-seconds left in the period.
Make it 3-2 Panthers after 20-minutes.
The 2nd period saw Lindsay strike first and draw even again, with another PP goal. Brad Langford banged in a rebound for his 2nd of the year.
The teams settled into a stretch of physical play, with both goaltenders being kept busy, holding the score at 3-3.
Late in the period, veteran defenceman Eammon Courtney gave the Panthers another lead with a beautiful goal. Courtney walked in from the blueline, danced around a defender and scored his 3rd of the season with 1:34 left in the 2nd period.
Seconds after Courtney’s goal, Pickering went on the powerplay – and it looked like the Panthers would take a 4-3 lead into the dressing room. But the Muskies pressed on the PK, forced a turnover, and Murray Free walked in and fired a quick shot for his 2nd marker of the game with 9-seconds remaining in the 2nd period.
Make it 4-4 after 40-minutes.
The 3rd period started with Lindsay having a lot of jump, and they peppered Panther netminder Chris Seiler with shots and traffic – and eventually grabbed the go-ahead-goal courtesy Cam Granger.
The Muskies didn’t let up. More shots and more traffic directed at the Panther goal, looking for the insurance marker. Seiler would end up under a pile of players several times, and twice have his masked knocked off his head with Muskies forwards driving the net.
Seiler remained calm, and the Panther defenders defended their netminder. Seiler would make 17-saves in the 3rd period, keeping the game within reach.
Midway through the frame, Pickering’s opportunity presented itself. With Pickering on the powerplay, Murray Free was called for crosschecking, giving the Panthers a 2-man advantage for almost 90-seconds.
Pickering Head Coach Bill Brady called a 30-second timeout to organize the troops, and it worked. The Panthers held control with the 2-man advantage, didn’t rush any low percentage shots, and setup their desired play.
Just over a minute into the PP, Jeff Broekema one-timed a cross-ice into the back of the net for his 1st goal with the Panthers.
Make it 5-5 heading into the late stages of the 3rd period.
Lindsay fought hard to get the winner late in the period, and their pressure led to a powerplay with just under five minutes to play. Seiler would make a pair of outstanding saves, scrambling to stop second chances on the rebound – and we were headed to overtime.
The extra frame was short. Just 15-seconds in the Panthers forced a faceoff in the Muskies end. Broekema, who just 10-minutes earlier scored the game-tying-goal won the faceoff clean to Tyler Von Englebrechten – who snapped a shot to the top, far corner, that squeaked through Matt Ginn’s catcher.
It was Von Englebrechten’s 1st of the year, in his 1st game with the Panthers this season. Make the final Pickering-6 @ Lindsay-5.
The Panthers now have 3-wins on the season, all coming against top teams in the Rudduck Division (Lindsay 2-wins, Kingston).
The Muskies earned a single point with the OT game, that point gives them a four point lead over Kingston for top spot in the Rudduck Division.
The Panthers next contest is Friday night in Pickering, when they face the Buffalo Jr. Sabres for the first time ever. Game time is 7:30pm.
